A Timeless Icon at Kruger Station
Tucked within the iconic Kruger National Park, a piece of South Africa’s railway history stands proudly on permanent display at Kruger Station: the South African Railways (SAR) Class 24 No. 3638 steam locomotive. This historic locomotive, which once traversed the country’s railways, now serves as a striking reminder of a bygone era, captivating visitors with its rich heritage and timeless presence.
A Journey Through Time
Built in 1949 by the North British Locomotive Company, No. 3638 was part of a fleet of 100 Class 24 steam locomotives designed under the supervision of Dr. M.M. Loubser, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of SAR. These locomotives were specifically crafted for branch lines with lighter rail infrastructure, making them a versatile and essential part of South Africa’s rail network. With a 2-8-4 “Berkshire” wheel arrangement, they provided reliable service across various regions, including South-West Africa (now Namibia) and later parts of South Africa such as Transvaal (Gauteng) and the Cape Province.
From Service to Preservation
As dieselisation advanced, Class 24 locomotives were gradually phased out, but No. 3638 found new life as a static display in the heart of Kruger National Park. Originally placed at the Selati Train Restaurant near Skukuza Rest Camp, the locomotive was an emblem of the historical Selati Railway Line, which once carried passengers and freight through the region. The railway itself traces back to the 1890s, when the discovery of gold along the Selati River spurred the construction of a line intended to link Komatipoort with the goldfields. However, financial difficulties stalled the project, and the railway only became fully operational in 1912.
A New Era at Kruger Station
Today, locomotive 3638 has been given a prestigious new home at Kruger Station, where it stands as a permanent exhibit. This beautifully restored space offers a blend of history, culture, and leisure, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the story of rail travel while enjoying world-class dining and retail experiences. The locomotive is the centrepiece of this vibrant hub, a striking contrast between past and present, evoking the romance of steam travel amid the untamed beauty of the park.
At Kruger Station, 3638’s presence is more than just historical—it is an invitation to step back in time.
Visitors can marvel at its intricate engineering, appreciate its role in South Africa’s rail history, and reflect on the transformation of transport and tourism in the region. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a railway aficionado, or simply someone who enjoys a unique cultural experience, the sight of this locomotive is sure to leave a lasting impression.
